About Cranford Publications

2019 marked Cranford's 40th Year Publishing.

In 1979, Cranford's work began with a reissue of a classic 19th century Scottish compilation, The Skye Collection. This marked the beginning of four decades dedicated to preserving and sharing Celtic musical traditions.

Cranford Publications specializes in Celtic fiddle music from Cape Breton, Ireland and Scotland. Proprietor Paul Stewart Cranford is a fiddler, composer and retired lighthouse keeper well-grounded in the traditions of music he sells, performs and arranges.

🏆 Cultural Educator

Recognized internationally with the Katherine McLennan Award (2018) for contributions to Cape Breton cultural preservation.

Paul's love affair with fiddle music began in 1975 upon his arrival in Nova Scotia from his native Toronto. Within a week, he stumbled upon a job as a lighthouse keeper, and it wasn't long before he picked up the fiddle as his primary instrument.

From 1976 to 1992, Paul learned Irish music from legendary fiddler Johnny Wilmot, adding another dimension to his Cape Breton and Scottish repertoire. During his 34 years as a lighthouse keeper, the month-on, month-off schedule provided the perfect opportunity to travel Cape Breton widely, visiting dozens of older musicians who took time to teach him.

Musical Inspiration from the Sea: According to Paul, most of his tunes come to him while walking the shores and beaches, listening to the wind and waves. The natural rhythms of the maritime environment became an integral part of his compositional voice.
